新约圣经处处都教导我们关于怎样敬拜上帝，而那都是坚立在“上帝是个灵”这个真理基础之上。耶稣在《约翰福音》4章24节说：“上帝是个灵（或无个字），所以拜他的，必须用心灵和诚实拜他。”[1]这是什么意思呢？为什么如此重要呢？为什么个人与教会对上帝的敬拜必须建立在上帝之灵性的基础上呢？
