8.3  The Lord Jesus, in His human nature thus united to the divine, was sanctified, and anointed with the Holy Spirit, above measure,1 having in Him all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge;2 in whom it pleased the Father that all fullness should dwell;3 to the end that, being holy, harmless, undefiled, and full of grace and truth,4 He might be thoroughly furnished to execute the office of a Mediator and Surety.5 Which office He took not unto Himself, but was thereunto called by His Father,6 who put all power and judgment into His hand, and gave Him commandment to execute the same.7

1 Ps 45:7; Jn 3:34; 2 Col. 2:3;  3 Col. 1:19;  4 Heb 7:26; Jn 1:14;  5 Acts 10:38; Heb 12:28; 7:22;  6 Heb 5:4–5;  7 Jn 5:22, 27; Mt 28:18; Acts 2:36.

This section has to do with the equipping of Jesus for His great work of mediating between God and man. Not only is He fully divine and fully human, as we saw in the previous section, but He was also sanctified (or set apart), anointed and filled with the Holy Spirit. This occurred at His baptism just before He officially began His work as the Messiah or Christ. Matthew 3:16-17 says, “And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

Quite often when we read the gospel accounts and see the great power and wisdom of Christ displayed on various occasions and in various ways, we tend to think only of the fact that Christ was divine. For example, when we read that “the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes” (Matt. 7:28-29) we attribute that directly to His divine authority and wisdom. However, a better way to understand the uniqueness of Christ in these passages is to see that He was given the Spirit without measure (John 3:34, Psa. 45:7). In other words, Christ was able to do these things because He was empowered and enabled by the Spirit to do them. If Stephen could be described as a man who was full of the Holy Spirit (Acts 6:5) and who was able to speak words which his opponents could not resist (Acts 6:10), then how much more so the Lord Jesus, who had the Spirit without measure.

Indeed, He was given the Spirit so that He might be thoroughly furnished or equipped to execute the office of Mediator and Surety. The Apostle Peter, in preaching Christ to Cornelius, said this about Him, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” (Acts 10:38)

Let us take away two thoughts from this section:

First, let us marvel at the great humiliation of Christ. He, who was the second person of the Godhead, so humbled Himself that as the God-man, He had to rely on the Holy Spirit’s help in order to accomplish His work.

Second, let us consider that if Christ needed to be filled with the Spirit in order to fulfil His tasks on this earth, then how much more do we need the Spirit in our lives!
