15.2 By it, a sinner, out of the sight and sense not only of the danger, but also of the filthiness and odiousness of his sins, as contrary to the holy nature, and righteous law of God; and upon the apprehension of His mercy in Christ to such as are penitent, so grieves for, and hates his sins, as to turn from them all unto God,1 purposing and endeavouring to walk with Him in all the ways of His commandments.2

Having told us about the importance of repentance in the preaching of the gospel, our confession goes on, in this paragraph, to teach us about the nature of true repentance. We may say three things about it.
First, true repentance must arise from a right understanding and motivation. This involves a sight and sense of the danger of sin. The sinner who repents should understand and feel something of the awful consequences of his sins, and how if he refuses to repent, he will surely experience them in due time. The Bible, in many places, warns us about the danger of continuing in sin. “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Lk 13:3). “Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire” (Mt 18:8).
But sensing the danger of sin and its consequences is not enough. One must also recognise and be convinced of the filthiness and hatefulness of sin – that it is contrary to God’s holy nature and righteous law. In fact, it is only as we understand what sin truly is that we will really understand why the consequences of sin must be so severe. Ultimately, every sin is an offense against God for sin, by definition, is the transgression of God’s law and God’s law is a reflection of His holy character. This is why David could say that his sin of adultery and murder was committed against God and God alone (Ps 51:4). A sinner who truly repents must thus be motivated not only by the consequences of his sin but also by its odious and hateful nature, which in turn leads him to grieve and hate all his sins.
Second, the sinner must recognize that the Holy God is also the merciful God in Jesus Christ, and that He promises mercy to those who truly repent of his sin. “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon” (Isa 55:7).
Finally, the sinner must turn from all his sins to God, determining and endeavouring to walk with God in all the ways that He commands. This does not mean that the penitent sinner will be totally sinless and free from all sin, but it does mean that he will continually strive against sin, seek to live righteously and regularly repent when he does fall into sin (1 Jn 1:7, 9).
May the Lord enable all of us to truly repent and to produce the fruits of true repentance in our lives!
