8.4  This office the Lord Jesus did most willingly undertake;1 which that He might discharge, He was made under the law,2 and did perfectly fulfill it;3 endured most grievous torments immediately in His soul,4 and most painful sufferings in His body;5 was crucified, and died,6 was buried, and remained under the power of death, yet saw no corruption.7 On the third day He arose from the dead,8 with the same body in which He suffered,9 with which also he ascended into heaven, and there sitteth at the right hand of His Father,10 making intercession,11 and shall return, to judge men and angels, at the end of the world.12

In section 1, we saw that God, from all eternity, chose and ordained His only begotten Son to be the mediator between God and man. Then in section 3, we learned that Christ did not appoint Himself to this office but was called to it by His Father. These statements might give the reader the impression that Jesus was somehow an unwilling party in the work of redemption. This, however, is far from the truth, and in this section, we are told in no uncertain terms that He most willingly undertook this office. In John 10:18, Jesus told His disciples, “No man taketh it (i.e. His life) from me, but I lay it down of myself.” And again in John 15:13, He said, “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Jesus did what He did willingly and out of love for His people. But what did He actually do? The rest of this section tells us.

First, He was born under the law and He perfectly fulfilled it. From the time He was laid in a manger till the time He stood in the Jordan to be baptised till the moment He cried out from the cross “It is finished”, Christ perfectly obeyed the law and never once violated it.

Second, He endured most grievous torments in His soul and most painful sufferings in His body, especially when He hung on the cross. More often than not, people tend to focus only on the physical or bodily sufferings of Christ. However, our confession reminds us that the agony which Christ endured went beyond the physical realm and into the spiritual realm.

Third, He, who was the Giver of life, died, was buried and remained under the dreadful dominion of death for a time; although His body did not experience decay.

Fourth, He rose from the dead on the third day with the same body in which He had suffered, and then, in that body, ascended into heaven, where He sits at the right hand of His Father and makes intercession for His people.

Finally, He shall someday return to this earth to judge both men and angels at the end of the world.

In the meantime, we should prepare ourselves for that day by constantly looking to Him, who loved us dearly and most willingly undertook the office of mediator on our behalf.
